First veg boxes have been delivered
Whoof that was a big week! Everyone has been grafting hard to get our first veg boxes out. We’re beyond grateful to all the volunteers who helped plant, tend and harvest our produce. And of course to all our paying customers who’ve taken the plunge with us to ‘share the risks and rewards of farming’.
This first season has really illustrated all the challenges of small-scale market gardening in Scotland. We’ve struggled with atrocious weather and pestilential wireworm which led to a lot of crops lost and a lot of delays. If we hadn’t had sufficient funding, and help from our volunteers, this could have been the end. That’s why it’s so crucial that we learn and document all these issues and help other people to navigate them so that we can have more community farms.
But on the other hand, we’ve made it through! We’ve got two beautiful new polytunnels now installed and full of tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers and more.
And that’s not all, we’re also well into the process of constructing our new packing shed - this is a really critical piece of infrastructure which means we can process and pack our vegetables away from the wind and rain. Freshness is so important to us, and having a packing shed will help ensure we can always pick and deliver on the same day, regardless of conditions.
Finally, we’ve also nearly got a car park! No more walking up from the village or parking on the muddy verge. Not only will this make it much easier for our volunteers to drop by, but it’ll also mean we can load boxes straight into a van, perfect for when we have larger numbers to deliver.
