Our first volunteering session

Exciting times at our St Baldreds site this Sunday 14th January as we started work for our first full season of operation, and our very first time opening up the farm to volunteers from the community.

This year our goal is to get around 2 acres of ground under cultivation producing a limited number of veg boxes and selling veg wholesale to the Crunchy Carrot in Dunbar. We’re starting slow because it takes time to develop the fertility of the ground naturally, and because we want our operations to be smooth and reliable before we start committing to delivering veg boxes in large numbers.

Today’s task was to get large tarps down to cover the area we will be planting in later. The tarps will help clear the area of grass so that we can turn it into vegetable beds. But in windy East Lothian that’s a lot of work! The tarps need to be well weighed down with sandbags to avoid catching the wind like a sail and blowing away.

Luckily we had the help of several volunteers from the community to help us fill around a hundred sandbags and stretch out tarps to cover the ground.

A beautiful view over the farm and our not-so-beautiful tarps

We were so happy to host this session, with children running around and people of all ages and walks of life mucking in to help.

We’ll be writing soon to let you know about future volunteering sessions, and if you’re interested in taking part and haven’t done so already please head over to our “take action” form and give us your details so we can email you.

Also, we have a lot we can share about our plans - how we’re organised, our business model, how we plan to develop the site, and what we’re going to be growing this year. If there’s anything you’d particularly like us to write about here, do let us know and we’ll post it as soon as we can.

Let’s grow together!
